The Vice president is in a precarious situation, accept or decline the invitation of the President (Rodrigo Roa Duterte).
Many consider that the invitation is a political ploy, a propaganda that will suit Duterte either way.
Senator Sonny Trillanes, a staunch critic of the president said, “It is a trap to disarm and politically neutralise her (VP Robredo) at this time that Duterte is facing the biggest political storm yet of his term as president.”
The question here actually is the timing, whether the public outrage over the series of blunders and the continuing impunity of the daily occurrences of (EJK) deaths and the political turmoil surrounding the president, including the mounting international pressure, would be enough to make one feel saying “yup, its’ about time to disassociate the position from the present government structure.”
Personally, I say, Madam Leni Robredo being the Vice president, duly recognised at least by the structure including the military hierarchy; she cannot completely disassociate herself. She is duty bound to face the devil so to speak, as she is a representation of what is professional, civil and moral, the very least as a matter of protocol.
Though many are saying that it is not of her mandate to heed the invitation especially that she is the moral and titular head of the opposition, hence she is not obligated.
But, what is at stake here is, who gets the higher ground in terms of the so-called battle of wits. This invitation is clearly a propaganda that will definitely serve or a mileage for the president, but to decline will also do the same anyways, or probably worst if she declines.
The president camp can use this as a direct admission that Leni is part of the so-called plot, hence, afraid to face the president. On the other hand, they can also use this as a propaganda like a “Judas breaking bread with Jesus,” probably not a good analogy but they will do the same anyway; knowing their capacity to spin and distort the news, to feed their zombies.
Hence, the only recourse is to brave on, dauntless, face the devil and beat him in his own game. But it must be clear that accepting the invitation will be more of a “private capacity” as an ordinary person will do having been invited to a dinner; despite knowing that the man who invited her represents the evil that she opposes.
It should be made clear and well-publicised that the acceptance is an act of being cordial, an apolitical. The VP should be able to appease the fear of many, that a mere dinner will not change her position and will continue her advocacy to serve as a voice for people, the helpless and marginalised people of the society.
Didn’t Jesus himself dine with the sinners? “It did not change Jesus, but eventually changed the sinners and the world.”
Luke 5:27- 5:32
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners: After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him, and Levi got up, left everything and followed him. Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
Of course, at this day and age, it will be too difficult to make people understand, especially that we now on in an age where lies are accepted as gospel truth, where fake news are being shared like popcorn.
As a citizen, please don’t get me wrong, I believe Senator Trillanes that this is a trap to neutralise or should I say deodorised the aching and sick image of the president. Nevertheless, Leni is in a situation where wisdom goes beyond politics and personal feelings.
I say Leni should heed the invitation with a clear, well-publicised intention that this is of her personal capacity, being a citizen Leni and a call to Christian faith. The devil is only stronger when faced with a weaker faith but gets weaker when faced with a higher faith and belief that the truth shall prevail in the end, and no one is above God and the law of civilised men.
Go Leni, brave on, face the devil, “Let neither he know, that you do not fear the devil nor his works.”
